2009 First-Time Home Buyer Tax Credit at a Glance

• The tax credit is for first-time home buyers only. The IRS sees a first-time home owner as someone who has not owned a primary residence in the past three years.
• Applies only to homes used as a taxpayer's principal residence.
• The tax credit does not have to be repaid.
• The tax credit is up to a maximum of $8,000.
• Applies to purchases that close after April 8, 2008, and before Dec. 1, 2009.
• Single taxpayers with incomes up to $75,000 and married couples with incomes up to $150,000 qualify for the full tax credit.
• To claim your tax credit you will have to submit the IRS Form 5405
